Updated: 5 days ago

Gotten the new Jimove ebike or perhaps some other new devices? Whether you’re new to e-bikes or exploring to get one in Singapore, this guide is here to help you start your journey safely and confidently. Understanding the regulations, mastering your device, riding safely, and knowing how to care for your new e-bike are crucial steps for a successful first ride. Let's dive in!

1. Know the Regulations

Before you hit the road, it's essential to familiarize yourself with the rules that keep you and others safe.

  • License and Age Requirements: In Singapore, you will need to be at least 16 years old and pass a Online Theory Test of Power-Assisted Bicycle in order to use it. Need help registering for it? Refer to our guide here!

  • Device Approval: All e-bikes must be approved by LTA and should bear a number plate and LTA seal. No modifications are allowed.

  • Speed Limits: Speeds are capped at 25km/hour, but note certain paths and areas may have different limits

  • Riding Locations and Road/Path Rules: E-Bikes are allowed on Cycling Path and Road, but NOT on footpath, expressways, and road tunnels! Breaking this rule may result in penalties!

  • Helmet Requirements: For safety and regulation reasons, please wear a helmet.

Did you know? if you are using foldable e-bikes such as Jimove MC foldable e-bike or Eco-Drive Ranger, they can be folded and brought onto public transport!

2. Master Device Basics Before You Ride!

Understanding your device is the first step towards a smooth and enjoyable ride. Most e-bikes have similar functions and features:

  • Powering On and Off: Hold the power button for at least 3 seconds to power it on/off

  • Turning on lights between 7pm to 7am: Riding at night or in low-visibility conditions? Hold the + button for at least 3 seconds (or more) to turn the light on/off

  • Monitoring Battery Level: If you are planning for long distance rides, always ensure that your battery is charged. Monitor the battery level meter/gauge to avoid having to manually cycle the device back

  • Understanding Speed Settings: Most e-bikes come with various speed settings that you can control with the + and - buttons. Practice switching between them to understand how your bike handles at different speeds.

  • Using the Bell and Horn: Cycling through a crowded area? Use your bell to gently alert pedestrians and other riders of your presence (but do not over do it!)

3. Ride Safely

Safety should always be your top priority when riding an e-bike. Observe some of the best practices below and be a safe road user among other users!

  • Start Slow: If you’re a beginner, it’s best to start at a low speed. This help you build confidence and lets you progressively get comfortable with handling and balance before accelerating. You do not always have to hit the max speed of 25km per hour.

  • Understanding the Right of Way: Knowing when to yield is crucial. Give way to pedestrians, slow down, and always follow the rules of the road to avoid conflicts. Check blind spots and signal early. Slow down and be careful on shared paths and pass carefully when near walkers.

  • Wearing Reflective Gear During Low Visibility: Visibility is key to ensure other road users can see you. If you’re riding at dawn, dusk, or during rain, reflective gear ensures others see you, in addition to turning on your lights.

4. Device Care

Taking care of the e-bike will extend its life and keep it running smoothly to minimise any down time.

  • Keeping Your Device Clean: Regular cleaning prevents dust and dirt from affecting the e-bike’s performance. A simple wipe-down after each ride goes a long way.

  • Avoiding Water and Moisture: Avoid riding during heavy rain. Water splashes and moisture can damage the electrical components.

  • Using Only Original Equipment: Stick to the provided chargers and accessories. Using third-party items might cause malfunctions and damage.

  • Parking Responsibly: When you’re done riding, park your device in a secured area and avoid blocking pathways or entrances. Designated parking spots are the best choice.
