Essential E-Bike & Mobility Device Care: Top Maintenance Tips for a Long-Lasting Ride

Just started your e-bike experience with MeMove? Or perhaps you recently obtained a new e-bike, PMA, or other forms of mobility device? Spare us the next 5 minutes as we walk you through some tips on how to keep the devices in top condition, ensuring they provide you with a smooth and safe ride every time!

Tip 1: Keep the Device Clean!

Taking care of your e-bike and mobility devices is crucial to ensure their longevity and optimal performance. Regularly clean your e-bike or PMD using a damp cloth to remove dirt and grime. Inspect the frame, tires, brakes, and lights for any signs of wear and tear. Addressing issues promptly can prevent more significant problems down the road. A dirty device can often cause future problems (affecting material, longevity, pest management and more) that make maintenance and repairs difficult!

Frequently missed out spots:

  • Bottom (underneath) of frame

  • Front and rear brake lights

Tip 2: Be mindful of the environment you use the device in

Storing the device outdoors or perhaps riding in the rain? While some manufacturers say their devices are suitable for use in light rain, we believe continued exposure to such harsh conditions for electronic devices can cause water damage, rust, and other problems to the device!

Here are our suggestions for better device care:

  • Avoid riding in the rain when possible. Use covers to protect the battery and controller if possible

  • Avoid riding across puddles (we know it's fun... but no, DO NOT DO IT!)

  • Do not ride or submerge your device, motor, battery or any parts in water!

  • Store device indoors whenever possible

  • When you have to park your device outdoors temporarily, always opt for sheltered areas whenever possible

Battery Maintenance

Tip 3: Battery Care, Charging and Storage

We have all seen those fire cases, haven't we? Here's our recommendations!

Please read:

  • Use only the original charger provided and stop charging when the battery is full. This is usually indicated by the LED light on the charger, or on the display panel.

  • Do not use 3rd party and unlicensed batteries. The are often uncertified and can cause fire damage.

  • Do not charge the battery if the temperature is below 0°C or above 30°C. Let the battery reach room temperature before charging, and allow optimal dissipation of heat.

  • If you are expecting to not use the battery for an extended time, such as during a holiday, do not leave it fully charged or completely flat or dead. Aim to keep the charge level between 1 to 4 bars (or between 25% to 75%).

  • Avoid charging the battery when it is wet. Wipe the battery, especially near the charging port, to ensure it is dry before charging.

  • Close/cover the battery and charging ports whenever possible, especially when riding in wet weather, to avoid and minimise any unnecessary water contact.

  • Examine the battery casing time to time for any damage or deformities such as bloating, corrosion or powdery residue.

Tire Care

Tip 4: Tires and usage

Before you start every ride, inspect the tires for any signs of damage, such as cuts, bulges, or excessive wear. Make sure there are no foreign objects (such as nails and nuts) embedded in the tread since it can cause further damage.

Regularly check your tire pressure and inflate them to the recommended level. Overinflated tires can lead to a harsh ride and are more prone to punctures, while underinflated tires can make pedaling harder.

When cycling:

  • Avoid curbs and rough terrains that could potentially damage the tires

  • Avoid riding over curbs and any sharp objects such as nails, nuts, glass since it can damage and even puncture the tyres

  • Avoid muddy and dirty areas. Clean the tyres after using to get rid of mud and debris to prevent damage and ensure they continue to work well.

Tip 5: Do not make any modifications or alterations to the device

We get it - it can be tempting to "zhng" and modify your device to your liking but it isn't worth it. There is also a risk that such battery, engine, and device modifications may cause usage failure, overheating and fire, or additional workload that reduces the device lifespan.

Apart from other battery and fire related risks, you will also lose manufacturer warranty and the device can also be confiscated by the authorities. I am sure you have seen those fire incidents on the news.

Is it worth it? We think not.

By the way if you are renting from MeMove, our devices are sourced and obtained from trusted suppliers and partners - we do not allow modifications. But if you are thinking of adding accessories like a phone holder or a cute umbrella to shade your screen - go ahead! Just make sure they are securely installed!
